In this context, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 2, which focuses on “Zero Hunger” or ending hunger, becomes a primary focus.

Hunger remains an urgent global issue, with millions of people worldwide still experiencing food shortages. To address this problem, it is crucial to understand the link between hunger and the right to food, as well as how the four pillars of the right to food can guide us in achieving SDG number 2.

SDG Number 2: Zero Hunger

SDG 2 aims to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition by 2030 by ensuring availability and access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food year-round for all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants.

Thus, this target includes improving agricultural productivity and the sustainability of food systems to meet the challenges posed by climate change and declining natural resources.

Unfortunately, this goal is still far from being achieved, primarily due to various challenges such as conflicts, climate change, and economic inequality. By 2024, the world continues to face acute hunger in several regions, particularly in developing countries.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), around 733 million people worldwide faced food insecurity in 2023. This issue demands integrated and sustainable solutions, as well as collaboration between governments, the private sector, civil society, and international organizations.

The Right to Food and Its Four Pillars

The right to food is part human rights, ‘It is realized when every man, woman and child, alone or in community with others, has physical and economic access at all times to adequate food or means for its procurement (E/C.12/1999/5)’. There are four main pillars of the right to food:

Availability

Food must be physically available in sufficient quantities. This implies a strong and sustainable agricultural system capable of meeting the growing population’s needs without harming the environment.

In your daily life, you can contribute by planting crops that are suitable for the local climate, humidity, and soil, making them easy to grow and produce food.

Access

Access means that every individual can obtain food both physically and economically. This includes the financial ability to purchase necessary food. For this, ensuring that vulnerable groups, such as the poor, women, and children have sufficient means to obtain food is important.

In communities located in remote areas where access to healthy food is only possible through purchase, you can conduct income-enhancing training activities, allowing them to have extra funds to buy healthy food.

Utilization

Utilization relates to how food is consumed and used by household and individual. This includes aspects of hygiene, food safety, and nutritional knowledge. Without proper utilization, even if food is available and accessible, the body’s nutritional needs may not be met.

An example of this is understanding how best to utilize food ingredients to obtain optimal nutrition, such as boiling or making chicken soup.

Stability

Food stability ensures that availability, access and utilization of food are not disrupted over time. This means preventing disruptions caused by external factors such as natural disasters, climate change, or conflicts that can affect food production and distribution.

If you encounter coastal communities that struggle to fish due to weather conditions, as someone skilled in preservation and packaging, you can train them on how to store essential supplies during lean seasons.

Building a Sustainable Food System

In the effort to achieve SDG number 2 and ensure the right to food for all, it is essential to build a sustainable food system. This system must take into account the entire supply chain, from production to consumption, while minimizing negative environmental impacts and promoting social inclusion.

Initiatives such as empowering local farmers, improving agricultural technology, and ensuring fair food distribution are crucial steps toward achieving this goal. Additionally, we need to ensure that national and international food policies support sustainability and protect the rights of vulnerable groups.

World Food Day serves as a reminder that hunger is not just a matter of food availability but also one of justice and equality. By applying the four pillars of the right to food, we can ensure that everyone has adequate access to safe and nutritious food, and ultimately achieve the goal of “Zero Hunger” by 2030.

For more interesting information on food systems, agriculture, and the environment, don’t forget to follow the official Instagram account @perkumpulan.tau!

Every year, on October 16, the world commemorates World Food Day as a moment to raise awareness about the importance of healthy and sustainable food systems.
