Maybe it’s just another sandwich or that sushi you can’t resist, but what if every meal had the power to create real change? In observance of United Nations Days, let’s explore how the food on your plate connects to SDG Goal 2: Zero Hunger and what you can do to help build a future where everyone has enough to eat.

The Food-Planet-Human Connection

When you grab your favorite meal, it’s easy to forget where it comes from. But each bite tells a story—of farmers, fishers, and workers who work tirelessly to grow that food. Farms smaller than 2 hectares contribute 28–31% of the world’s total crop production and 30–34% of the global food supply, despite using only 24% of the agricultural land. These small farms focus more on producing food and grow a wider variety of crops compared to larger farms. (Ricciardi et al., 2018). Yet they are facing multiple challenges, including climate change and low prices.

The world doesn’t just need more food—it needs sustainable food production systems. By 2030, the UN aims to: ensure sustainable food production and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity, protect ecosystems, and help farmers adapt to climate change, drought, and floods—all while improving soil and land quality. In simple terms, it’s not just about growing more food—it’s about growing it the right way so we don’t harm the planet or leave anyone behind.

How You Can Make an Impact (Right from Your Plate!)

The good news is that you don’t have to be a farmer to support sustainable food systems. Your everyday food choices already have a ripple effect. Here are three ways you can use your plate to promote Zero Hunger:

1. Eat Mindfully and Waste Less

Did you know that 1/3 of the world’s food goes to waste? Reducing food waste at home is one of the easiest ways to fight hunger.

Get creative with leftovers – social medias are full of tips for repurposing last night’s dinner into something new and tasty.

2. Support Small Farmers and Sustainable Systems

Whenever possible, look for sustainable-certified food products, which ensure farmers are paid fairly and have access to better tools and practices. In Indonesia, these products may not be available in major supermarkets—perhaps voicing our demand can make one!

Buying local and seasonal produce helps farmers reduce transport emissions while supporting the local economy. Bonus: It’s usually fresher and tastier, too!

3. Try Plant-Based, Occasionally

Producing meat uses up a lot of resources, like land and water. Cutting down on meat—even for a couple of meals a week—makes the system more efficient and leaves more food and land available to those who need it most.

What Happens Beyond Your Plate?

The battle to end hunger isn’t just about eating better—it’s also about preparing for the future. Farmers today face challenges like extreme weather, floods, droughts, and rising temperatures. With sustainable farming techniques, we can strengthen ecosystems and improve land and soil quality to prepare for these challenges. Your choices as a consumer help shape a food system that supports farmers in building resilience.

Your Plate, Your Power

We may not have control over everything, but we do have power over our choices. By reducing food waste, supporting sustainable farmers, and eating mindfully, we’re helping to build a sustainable food system that is fair, resilient, and ready for the future.

So, next time you grab food, ask yourself: What’s the story behind my plate? And how does it better me, and how can I use it to change the world? 🌍

Quoting António Guterres, Secretary-General’s of the UN, in his 2024 United Nations Day message, “In today’s troubled world, hope is not enough. Hope requires determined action and multilateral solutions for peace, shared prosperity, and a thriving planet.”

Let’s Start a Conversation! For more engaging stories about food systems, agriculture, the environment, and more, please follow @perkumpulan.tau on Instagram!

Ever thought your lunch could be a force for good?
