Every year on June 5, the world comes together to celebrate World Environment Day, a moment to reflect on our relationship with nature and renew our commitment to protecting the planet. In 2025, the global theme—#BeatPlasticPollution—calls urgent attention to one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: plastic waste.
At Tanah Air Udara (TAU), we believe that tackling plastic pollution must go hand-in-hand with building a sustainable food system—a system that nourishes people, supports local economies, and heals the Earth.
🍽️From Soil to Plate: The Hidden Plastic in Our Food System
Plastic has infiltrated every stage of the modern food chain:
- Agricultural inputs: Plastic mulch films, seed coatings, and packaging for chemical fertilizers contribute to long-term soil degradation and microplastic contamination.
- Processing and packaging: Most industrially processed foods come in single-use plastics that are used for mere minutes but persist in ecosystems for centuries.
- Markets and distribution: Traditional markets are increasingly adopting plastic packaging, and food delivery platforms rely heavily on disposable containers and cutlery.
- Waste management: Without proper sorting and recycling systems, plastic food packaging ends up clogging rivers, poisoning marine life, and leaching toxins into our soil and water.

TAU Approach: Beating Plastic Pollution Through Food Civility
For us, a sustainable food system is not just about what we eat—but how food is grown, distributed, consumed, and valued. Here’s how TAU contributes to #BeatPlasticPollution
- Championing Plastic-Free Farming
TAU supports farmer cooperatives and permaculture practitioners who avoid plastic-based inputs, opting instead for:
- Organic compost and natural fertilizers
- Bamboo, banana leaves, or other biodegradable materials for mulching and packaging
- Water-conserving and soil-nourishing techniques that reject plastic irrigation pipes or bags
2. Reinvigorating Traditional Wisdom
In many Indonesian communities, traditional food systems were inherently low-waste. Markets wrapped food in banana leaves or woven palm fronds—practices that are not only sustainable but culturally rich. We advocate for reviving and supporting these practices in local economies.
3. Empowering Local Food Networks
Shortening the distance between farm and fork reduces the need for excessive packaging and transport. TAU promotes community-supported agriculture (CSA), local farmers’ markets, and direct-to-consumer food initiatives that minimize plastic use and support smallholders.
4. Youth Engagement & Education
We empower youth and women to lead plastic-free campaigns in food production and consumption through workshops, storytelling, and on-ground experiments in food waste composting, seed saving, and zero-waste cooking.

🛑Rethink. Refuse. Regenerate.
This World Environment Day, we urge individuals, communities, and policymakers to go beyond surface-level solutions. Recycling alone is not enough. We must refuse single-use plastics in our kitchens and farms, rethink our relationship with convenience, and regenerate food systems that align with ecological and cultural resilience.
🌿 Join the Movement
Be a part of TAU’s journey to a plastic-free, food-sovereign future. Here’s how you can take action:
- Support farmers who use traditional and organic packaging;
- Carry your own food containers and reusable bags;
- Advocate for plastic-free policies in local food markets;
- Share your story using #BeatPlasticPollution and #TanahAirUdara
This World Environment Day, let’s not only beat plastic pollution—but also sow the seeds of a more just, nourishing, and sustainable world. (a.S.)
